While the tranquillity of Villa De Zoysa offers the perfect backdrop for yoga and reflection, the spirit of Sri Lanka is also found in its wild, untamed heart. Known as one of the best places in Asia for wildlife spotting, our island is home to the "Big Five": Elephants, Leopards, Sloth Bears, Blue Whales, and Sperm Whales.
If you are looking to balance your retreat with an adventure into the bush or out to sea, here is your guide to the best wildlife experiences in Sri Lanka and how to reach them from our sanctuary.
1. Mirissa: The Giants of the Deep
Sri Lanka is uniquely positioned as one of the few places in the world where you can see the largest animal ever to live, the Blue Whale, just a few miles from the shore. The southern coast, specifically Mirissa, is a global hotspot for whale watching.

What to see: Blue Whales, Sperm Whales, Spinner Dolphins, and occasionally Orcas.
Best time to visit: November to April (when the seas are calm).
Distance from Villa De Zoysa: Approximately 40 km (1 to 1.5 hours).
This is our closest major wildlife attraction and makes for an easy early morning excursion before returning to the Villa for afternoon yoga.
2. Yala National Park: The Land of the Leopard
Yala is Sri Lanka’s most famous park, boasting one of the highest leopard densities in the world. The terrain is a stunning mix of dry woodlands and open grasslands that lead right down to the Indian Ocean.

What to see: Leopards, elephants, sloth bears, and crocodiles.
Best time to visit: February to June (dry season). The park often closes for maintenance in September and October.
Distance from Villa De Zoysa: Approximately 177 km (3.5 to 4 hours via the Southern Expressway). We recommend an overnight trip or a very early morning departure.
3. Udawalawe National Park: The Elephant Sanctuary
If your heart is set on seeing gentle giants, Udawalawe is a must. It is one of the best places in the world to see wild Asian elephants year-round. The lack of dense vegetation makes it incredibly easy to spot herds roaming near the vast reservoir.

What to see: Large herds of elephants, water buffalo, and crested serpent eagles.
Best time to visit: Year-round, though October to January is beautiful for bird watching.
Distance from Villa De Zoysa: Approximately 137 km (2 to 2.5 hours). This is a perfect destination for a full-day trip.
4. Bundala National Park: A Birdwatcher’s Paradise
A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Bundala is a maze of lagoons, scrublands, and dunes. It is the ultimate destination for bird enthusiasts, as it serves as a wintering ground for migratory birds from as far away as Siberia.

What to see: Greater Flamingos, crocodiles, and diverse migratory bird species.
Best time to visit: September to March (migratory season).
Distance from Villa De Zoysa: Approximately 153 km (2.5 to 3 hours).
