Ancient Mariners on Our Doorstep: Turtle Conservation at Villa de Zoysa

At Villa de Zoysa, we share our peaceful stretch of coastline with some of the ocean’s oldest residents. Sri Lanka’s southern province is a vital nesting ground for five species of sea turtles, and as a guest at the Villa, you are perfectly placed to witness these magnificent creatures up close.

From local conservation efforts just down the road to wild encounters in the surf, here is your guide to the turtles of Boossa and beyond.

Our Neighbours: Bluewave Sea Turtle Sanctuary

You don’t have to travel far to support marine conservation. Located just a short walk from Villa de Zoysa in Boossa is the Bluewave Sea Turtle Sanctuary.

Unlike many commercial hatcheries, Bluewave is a not-for-profit operation dedicated entirely to the welfare of these creatures. It is free to enter, reflecting their mission to educate rather than profit. When you arrive, the passionate staff provide a detailed guided tour for free, explaining the different species, the threats they face, and how the sanctuary works to protect them.

While there is no entrance fee, they do have an optional donation box. Every contribution goes directly toward the care of injured turtles and the maintenance of the hatchery. It is a wonderful, authentic place to practice Ahimsa (non-harm) and support our local biodiversity.

The Magic Hour: Most evenings around 5:00 PM, the sanctuary releases newly hatched baby turtles into the ocean. If you time your visit for late afternoon, you may have the chance to take part in this moving experience, watching the tiny hatchlings begin their journey into the deep as the sky turns gold. It is truly one of the most beautiful ways to watch the sunset.

Wild Encounters at Dalawella & Wijaya Beach

For those who dream of swimming alongside turtles in the wild, a trip to Dalawella Beach is essential. Protected by a natural rock reef, the lagoon here is calm and shallow, the perfect kitchen for oceanic nomads who come to feast on the seagrass.

While you're there, make sure to visit Wijaya Beach Restaurant. It is a local landmark known for its incredible wood-fired pizzas and relaxed atmosphere. You can enjoy a fresh coconut on the deck and watch the turtles' heads bobbing in the waves just meters away. It’s one of the best spots on the island to combine a great meal with nature watching.

The Resident Voyagers of Hikkaduwa

Heading north from the Villa, the town of Hikkaduwa offers another unique experience. In the shallow waters near the main reef, several "resident" turtles are known to swim right up to the shore. These ancient voyagers are remarkably comfortable with humans, allowing for a truly breathtaking snorkel experience.

Mindful Interaction

We believe in witnessing nature with respect. When visiting our finned friends:

  • Observe, Don’t Touch: Turtles are sensitive; please keep a respectful distance.

  • Plastic-Free Travel: We encourage all our guests to help keep our beaches clean to ensure the ocean remains a safe home for these creatures.

  • Flash-Free: If you happen to see a turtle nesting on the beach at night, please do not use flashlights or cameras, as this can disorient them.

Experience the Magic

Whether you are walking to Bluewave Sanctuary to participate in releasing turtle hatchlings or taking a sunset trip to Dalawella, seeing a sea turtle is an experience that remains with you forever.
